      What is School Counseling?

      • What is School Counseling?

The Iowa City Community School District has a K-12 school counseling program. The purpose of the program is to provide students with personal, social, educational, and career development. The school counseling program collaborates with students, school personnel, parents, and community members to provide a positive school climate and deliver programs which assist all students in the aforementioned areas.

The school counseling program of the District is based on the belief that all students should participate in activities and instruction that will assist in their optimal development. The program is seen as an integral part of the educational process. It is for each and every student.

The Elementary School Counseling Program provides education, prevention and intervention activities, which are integrated into all aspects of a student’s school experience. Research-based, developmentally appropriate curriculum focuses on knowledge, attitudes and skills students need to acquire in academic, career and social-emotional development, which serve as the foundation for future success.

At the secondary level, students and families benefit from counselor advocacy and collaboration with school staff. Counselors are an integral part of ensuring student academic and personal success. These are achieved through providing supports that are primarily individualized for each student. Every student is assigned a specific counselor to work with them throughout their secondary school career.
